We maintain extensive lesson notes so that every teacher is up to speed on what is happening should the need arise to step in if another teacher is away. Studio ProjectsThis year, there will be two Recitals which are available for student participation. Students also have the option to participate in music festivals in November and April and will be welcome to audition for any other opportunities that should arise as the year progresses. There may also be opportunities for advanced students to participate in projects with The King's University Music Department. More information regarding these projects will be forthcoming from your teacher if you are eligible to participate.

Acting and Musical Theatre Classes This year, Purple Door Music Academy is working with professional actor and director, Garry Williams to offer online theatre intensive classes for students. Classes will focus on audition techniques, acting through song, basic movement ideas and monologues. Students may opt to perform their selections in recitals and masterclasses or enroll in the Edmonton Speech Arts and Music Festival classes in the spring. If you are interested in acting coaching, please let us know so that we can arrange a time with Garry. Royal Conservatory of Music Exams All students can do Royal Conservatory of Music exams. This is a great performance goal, especially for our younger students, as it gives us the chance to focus on music literacy as well singing great songs. Your teacher will work with you to determine an appropriate exam level and if an exam is a possibility this year. Exam registration will be at the expense of the student and should an accompanist other than Miss Kim need to be hired, the accompanist fee will be at the cost of the student. Exams are scheduled by the Royal Conservatory of Music sometime in June with notice for the exam usually coming sometime in the last week of May. Students will be responsible for registering themselves and paying the fee for the exam through the RCM website. You will be required to register using the teacher number is 62183 assigned to Kimberley Denis. Fees

The fees associated with registration and accompanists for these undertakings or other external events in which the student may participate will be the responsibility of the student. CommunicationThe primary means of communication in the studio will be email. We do not send a great many emails, but when we do, it is important that you read and comprehend all the information contained therein. Our email address is: info@purpledoormusic.com
Our administrative personnel will read your email and forward it or respond as required. Occasionally, students may wish to text the office. Likely, we will not be able to respond right away as we are often teaching or in rehearsals. The office cell number is 780-667-7464 (SING). It is difficult to respond to phone calls during regular business hours as we are all teaching so email is by far the best method to communicate with us. We would also appreciate it if students could refrain from texting or calling after 9pm. For lesson scheduling, group rehearsal scheduling, recital information, make-up lesson scheduling and other information related to the running of the studio, we use a scheduling software which sends reminders via text and email regarding lessons. Please confirm or cancel through the lesson confirmation emails. If there are concerns or questions, parents are asked to email these questions to the teacher or Purple Door Music Academy (admin@purpledoormusic.com) rather than using the beginning of your child's lesson time to answer questions. No questions will be answered following the lesson as this takes time away from another student. If you happen to miss a lesson, your teacher will be using this time to assess student progress and plan activities for future lessons. To schedule a make-up lesson, please email info@purpledoormusic.com or discuss options with your teacher. Refund and Withdrawal PolicyAs there will be ample opportunities for make-up lessons, and because lessons can be offered both online and in-person, there will be no refunds given. If there are extenuating circumstances that prevent in-person lessons from taking place, all lessons will take place online. Should a participant decide to not participate in online lessons or not complete their make-up lessons, no refunds will be given for unused lessons.
Students are expected to commit to the full year of lessons unless otherwise discussed and approved by Purple Door Music Academy. Withdrawals from Purple Door Music Academy throughout the year are possible with two full months paid notice. Notice of withdrawal must be received in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute a withdrawal. Make-Up Lesson and Cancellation PolicyAll students will be assigned a weekly, regularly scheduled time for their lesson. Lesson lengths are 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes. As our studio is very full, it is often very difficult to provide extra lessons for students; when options are available for students, they are asked to sign up early in the season for make-up lessons rather than waiting until the end of the year. If a student misses their regularly scheduled time, they may be able to schedule a make-up lesson with their teacher, provided they have given at least 24 hours notice and your teacher is available to make up the lesson. Your teacher is not obligated to provide a make-up lesson for lessons missed by a student. Students are required to give a minimum 24-48 hours notice if they will be missing a lesson. More notice is appreciated. Should students fail to give the minimum amount of notice, no opportunity for a make-up lesson will be given. This time has been set aside for you and your teacher has built their schedule to be available to you during this time. If a student misses the masterclass or recital, no refunds will be issued. Statutory holidays are not counted in the lesson count and do not need to be made up. We have also included the month of June as possible make-up lesson times.
In case of student illness or illness in the family, students are asked to contact their teacher directly to schedule an online lesson during their regular lesson time. It is imperative that students DO NOT attend a lesson if they are unwell. We have built a couple of sick weeks into the schedule to accommodate these circumstances while ensuring you still receive the number of lessons indicated in the student handbook. Purple Door Music Academy appreciates your efforts to help us maintain a healthy studio. If school or busing is cancelled due to a snow day, you can assume that lessons will still take place as roads are usually cleared by noon, but please use your judgement regarding road safety, especially if a snow storm begins in the afternoon. It is very difficult to re-arrange a student's lesson time throughout the year to accommodate other extra-curricular activities or vacation plans. We will do our best to accommodate the request, but it may not be possible. Occasionally, your teacher will need to miss a lesson. In these instances, we will offer an opportunity to re-schedule the lesson. We have built a certain number of missed lessons into our lesson numbers and we will ensure that you receive the required number of lessons throughout the year. If there are concerns or questions, parents are asked to email these questions to the teacher or Purple Door Music Academy (info@purpledoormusic.com) rather than using the beginning of your child's lesson time to answer questions. No questions will be answered following the lesson as this takes time away from another student. If you happen to miss a lesson, your teacher will be using this time to assess student progress and plan activities for future lessons. ParkingParking at the Purple Door Music Academy is available on the street as well as behind the house on the garage parking pad. While there is a waiting room for parents, to decrease the number of people in the studio, I am asking parents to take the opportunity to run some errands, get a coffee, or buy some groceries while your student is in their lesson. I am very close to South Edmonton Common and there are a number of errand type places on 23 Ave. Should you choose to wait in the car, please turn off your engine and do not idle in front of the house. The air filtration system that has been installed draws in a great deal of outdoor fresh air and we want to avoid drawing in exhaust fumes as much as possible.
Lastly, when turning around to park on the same side of the street as Purple Door Music, please pull all the way into the intersection at the corner and do not drive on the sidewalk or lawns. I've had neighbour complaints because people have driven across lawns to turn around. Please be respectful of the neighbourhood. LocationPurple Door Music Academy is located in the home of Kimberley Denis, our owner. Please treat her home as your own. The entrance to the Purple Door Academy is located on the side of the house. Please come in, remove your shoes, and head directly down the stairs to the basement.
Practicing and Working at HomeThere are many tasks and exercises that we undertake during a lesson. We recommend that every student brings a device to record the lesson; during the week, please practice with the recording and listen to the corrections to the repertoire and exercises. During lessons, we will also often record additional exercises, voice parts, and accompaniments to assist in your learning. These recordings will be e-mailed to students as mp3 recordings if they do not provide their own recording device. We will also upload the recordings to a google classroom so that if something goes missing, it is easily replaceable and accessible online.
To get the best results in a student’s learning, it is important that students regularly practice. Even as little 15 minutes/day with a focus on the various technical things that we talk about in lessons and learning of the songs will help us move forward. A good formula for practicing is:
Protection of PrivacyThe personal information requested on the registration form is collected and protected under s.33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act will only be used to manage the business function for which it was collected and uses directly consistent with that purpose. Questions concerning this collection should be directed to the: Information Management and Privacy Coordinator, Purple Door Music Academy, 1035 77 ST NW, Edmonton, AB T6K 3G4; tel.: 780-667-7464.
We will occasionally try to take photographs or video of students during lessons and performances for use in advertising, lesson demonstrations, the studio website and the studio facebook page. Any material that is posted publicly is to highlight and celebrate your child’s accomplishments, but if there is an image or video that you wish to have removed, please let us know. Student Safety, COVID-19, Illness Prevention Measures, and Parent ObservationParents are responsible for the safety of their child to and from lessons at the Purple Door Music Academy. The Purple Door Music Academy is not liable for any injury or damage that may occur. During lessons, parents are encouraged to wait outside of the studio or arrange an easy to find meeting spot with their student following the lesson. Should someone wish to listen to the lesson, arrangements can be made in advance with the teacher. Students behave much differently when their parents or friends are in the room and for many students, their best learning comes from a focused student/teacher relationship without outside judgement or influence during lesson times.
We ask that if your student is sick, please do not bring them to the lesson. If they are well enough to attempt an online lesson, this is definitely a possibility but we ask that sick students please stay home so as to keep our teachers and other students healthy throughout the year. Should a student become ill during a lesson, they will be asked to immediately leave the studio. Some may drive themselves and others will be asked to call a parent/guardian. Students waiting to be picked up will be asked to wait in a room off the waiting room or outside on the deck, weather permitting. Air Filtration System Purple Door Music Academy has installed a HEPA filter and static electricity air filtration system on the main furnace, as well as a UV-C light to treat all air in the home before it is circulated in the house. Fresh air is drawn in from outside the home and air is exchanged in the house approximately every 30 minutes. In addition, a large cold air exchange system has been installed to draw air out of the basement faster, and a large fan has been installed in the bathroom to encourage even more air exchange in the basement. Air Purifiers Current research indicates that air purifiers with HEPA filters and UV-C lights placed at the point of performance (ie. where the student stands) significantly decrease airborne molecules. (See the study available from the University of Cincinnati.) Each studio has been equipped with a Germ Guardian Air purifier which includes both a HEPA filter and a UV-C light. The purifiers will be on continuously throughout the lesson. Plexiglass Shields Each studio has been equipped with a large plexiglass shield which will be placed between the student and the teacher to prevent exchange of large droplets. Students are welcome to have these in place during lessons if they would like/ Cleaning Music stands, pianos and pencils will be disinfected between each student. In addition, only the teacher is allowed to open and close the classroom doors. The entire studio is also cleaned every evening and high touch areas are cleaned throughout the day. Hand Sanitizer Upon entry to the studio, every student is asked to use the sanitizer provided at the door before going to the basement. Look for the blue spray bottle or a pump sanitizer bottle. |
